October 21 Update

Please note that the planned traffic switch at Highways 22 and 27/Main Avenue will not take place October 21 as previously announced.

Intersection 990 Construction Update – October 16, 2026

Crews are busy completing the roundabout and preparing to move traffic onto the new roadway. A temporary traffic change will begin October 21 and is expected to remain in place for approximately two weeks to accommodate this work. Please watch for signs, allow extra travel time and check back for updates.

Progress to date

Northeast area:

• Most of the roundabout curbs and the north traffic island are complete.
• The first layer of pavement has been placed on the east side of the roundabout.
• Topsoil placement is underway, and fencing is complete.

Northwest area:

• Drainage work, including culverts and catch basins, is mostly complete.
• Fencing is complete.
• Four streetlight bases and underground wiring have been installed.

Southeast area:

• The work area has been prepared, and crews are building up the ground for the new roadway.
• The future park area has been prepared, with gravel placed for the new pathway and picnic area.

What’s coming next

Northeast area:

• Finish the remaining roundabout curbs and traffic island.
• Complete paving, road connections and line painting on the north and east sides.
• Install permanent signs.

Prepare for the traffic change planned for October 21.

Northwest area:

• Move Highway 22 traffic onto the newly built roadway.
• Continue building the west approach and finish its curbs, paving and line painting.
• Install signs and streetlights.
• Open the new Highway 584 roadway and switch traffic to the new alignment.
• Finish the remaining drainage and channel work.

Southeast area:

• Continue building the south approach and finish its curbs, paving and line painting.
• Install signs and streetlights.
• Move the Town of Sundre welcome sign, picnic tables and electrical cabinets.
• Build the new paved pathway.
• Remove the old road sections and open the roundabout to traffic.

** Upcoming traffic change**

A temporary detour is expected to begin October 28 and will remain in place for up to two weeks while crews connect Highway 584 to the roundabout. Drivers travelling to or from Highway 584 will need to follow the marked detour using 10 Street, 5 Avenue and 7 Street SW. Highway 27 and Highway 22 traffic will use the new roundabout approaches. Please see the detour plan showing where traffic will be directed.

Intersection 990 Construction Update – October 1, 2026

Work at Intersection 990 continues to be busy, with crews now focused on concrete, road work and paving. A traffic change is also planned in the next two weeks so please check back for more details. Below is a look at the progress for the last week and what’s coming next.

Progress to date:

• Completed most of the bridge culvert installation, except on the south side.
• Placed fill for the roadway embankment on the west side.
• Placed and compacted granular material in the roundabout area and at the approaches to the roundabout.
• Completed concrete pours for streetlight bases.
• Installation of culverts, catch basins and lead pipes is ongoing.
• Topsoil is being placed in the northeast quadrant of the intersection.

What’s coming next:

• Continue pouring concrete for the roundabout curb and gutters and splitter islands.
• Continue placement of granular base material for the approaches to the roundabout.
• Pave the bottom lift of asphalt from the east side of the project limits to the roundabout.
• Install traffic signs in the northeast quadrant of the intersection.
• Single lane closures will now be in effect until the project is complete. Please watch for flaggers on site who will help direct traffic.

A traffic pattern change is planned for Thursday, October 15. More information will follow next week.

The project is on schedule to be completed by the end of October, pending weather and unforeseen site conditions. The team would like to thank everyone for their continued care and caution while driving through the site.

Visible progress continues to take place on the Intersection 990 improvements. Below is a look at what has been completed so far and what residents and drivers can expect over the next few weeks.

• Culvert pipe installation is ongoing.
• Electrical conduit installation was completed in the northeast quadrant of the intersection.
• Nine streetlight bases have been poured.
• Placement and compaction of granular material within the roadway structure are continuing.
• Grading and underground works are continuing to progress.

What’s coming next:

• Form and pour concrete for one half of the roundabout.
• Finish forming and pouring the splitter island and gutters in the northeast quadrant of the intersection.
• Place the final lift of granular material and pave from the east side of the project limits to the roundabout.
• A traffic pattern change is planned for early October. More details will be shared soon.
