Shops & Services

Full-service grocery, florists & unique gift shops, hair salons & barber shops, hardware stores, computer sales & repair, tire shops, outdoor gear, jewellery & fashion establishments, two fully-stocked pharmacies, a must-stop candy shop, and so much more.  Sundre's local businesses help make us "somewhere", and not just "anywhere". We boast three full-service banks, along with several accounting, real estate and legal offices. The centrally-located post office has mail boxes available and a complete range of services to meet your needs.

Restaurants

Pub? Home-style? Greek? Fast food? A great steak with a nice glass of wine?  Our restaurants and coffee shops offer variety in both atmosphere and cuisine. Several taverns also feature regular entertainment.

Health & Emergency Services

Police, ambulance and fire department services are all located within the community. Sundre has a fully-equipped hospital, which includes emergency services and a long term care facility, two medical clinics, a dental office, and a denture clinic. There are two optometrist offices and several massage, chiropractic, and physiotherapy centres.

A community health centre offers a full line of services for new parents and babies, people with disabilities, and seniors. Mental health services are also available through the centre. Other social services are available through Sundre Family & Community Support Services and Greenwood Neighbourhood Place.

Education & Children

Sundre's school system boasts a dedicated and innovative staff, whose focus is squarely on your kids. River Valley School (kindergarten to grade 8) builds a creative and inclusive environment that continues on into grades 9 to 12 at the Sundre High School.  At SHS, excellent academic, athletic and music programs have turned many Sundre youth into provincial champions of various sorts and the school performs amongst the highest level throughout the province, in terms of number of graduates, number of students participating in Provincial Achhievement Tests, and in other critical areas.  Sundre High School's commitment to delivering a well-rounded and solid education to its students has also resulted in a very successful dual credit program (where students earn transferable college/trade credits while still in high school) and in a Community Learning Centre which offers an alternative learning environment.  Sundre's Centre is considered an exceptional model for such facilities, both within the local school division and beyond.

Day-care and playschool are available for pre-schoolers. Also, many after school activities are available for children, ranging from dance and music to sports and movie nights.

Summer camps abound in the Sundre area, and a summer fun program is held during July and August each year to provide adventure and interesting activities for children aged 6 to 14.

Senior Services

Seniors are considered special residents of Sundre and, in fact, our 75+ group makes up 10% of our population.  Their changing needs help to shape our community, and Mountain View Seniors Housing offers a selection of housing options.  Wild Rose Court, Hagen Manor and Pioneer Place are all ground-level apartment buildings and Foothills Lodge is an assisted living facility. Private apartments specifically for seniors are also available to rent or purchase. Seniors' activities and other community events are held on a regular basis at the Sundre West Country Centre.

Churches

Churches in and around town have regular services and several of them offer youth progrmming. There are church-sponsored events year-round.

Events

Sundre's people are an active bunch, staging a wide range of local events all throughout the year.  While the professional rodeo is Sundre's largest event, there is always something going on at the  museum, and a variety of groups and organizations make sure there is never a dull moment - summer or winter.  To find out about what's up around town, check Sundre's newest Events Tool, mysundre.ca.  At this calendar site, groups and organizations of any kind can post their events, and also check for date conflicts when planning their next activities.

Recreation & Leisure Activities

Sundre offers a rich and varied selection of opportunities - for adults, youth & children - to get involved in sports and other physical activities, as well as other leisure, arts & culture, and volunteer interests.  Recreation facilities in Sundre include an indoor swimming pool & fitness centre , arenacurling rink, baseball diamonds, soccer pitch, horse-shoe pits, rodeo grounds, tennis courts, as well as three golf courses closeby.  Our town's beautiful location provides a great natural setting for excellent walking trails, along with fishing and other river activities like canoeing, kayaking and white-water rafting.  Minor hockey and soccer are extremely popular with the kids, but participation in dance programs is just as high, and kids can also choose martial arts, figure skating, gymnastics, 4-H, or various library programs and school-based clubs.

Lots of other options are also available to both kids & adults through a wide range of clubs and organizations.  Gardening, performing and visual arts, historical and agricultural are just some of the other interests represented through such groups.  As well, there are Sundre chapters of services organizations such as Elks, Lions and the Legion.

One of Sundre's greatest assets is its proximity to "the West Country" - the Rocky Mountain foothills that rise just outside our back door.  Nature and outdoor lovers of every stripe have almost whatever kind of outdoor recreation they want at their fingertips.  Whether you want a picnic or a wilderness camping trip, a wade in a creek or some white-water kayaking, an afternoon stroll or a multi-day back-country hike, photography, bird-watching, exploring with your ATV  ... "recreation" and "leisure" have a whole new meaning a half-hour from town.

Recycling

The Town of Sundre is an environmentally-conscious community and an active participant in recycling and composting programs. We encourage new residents to stop in at the Town Office for more information regarding these projects, or to address any other questions they may have.
